Have Your MBA But Know Nothing About the Wine Lifestyle?

You can have an MBA, a successful career, and a packed social calendar—but still feel completely lost when someone hands you a wine list.

The good news? You don't need to be a sommelier to understand wine.

Welcome to another instalment of The Flying Winemaker's Crash Course in Wine. Before we dive into the world of grapes, regions, and tasting notes, I thought I'd share how I got into wine, why it became a passion, and why learning about wine is worth your time.

Why Should You Learn About Wine?

Wine education isn't about memorising every grape or wine region in the world. It's about becoming more confident when tasting, buying, and talking about wine. A little knowledge can improve your food-and-wine experiences, sharpen your senses, and turn wine from something intimidating into something genuinely fun.

My Wine Story: From Summer Job to Wine Career

My wine journey began when I was just 16 years old.

With both my parents working, my mother insisted that I find a summer job—partly to earn some money and partly to keep me out of trouble.

Luckily, my sister, who was already a respected wine professional, helped me land a job at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch.

I was basically the do-everything guy: carrying boxes, stocking shelves, washing glasses, unloading trucks, and occasionally playing "tea lady" for senior staff.

Wine itself wasn't really on my radar.

Until one day, the tasting room was short-staffed.

I was told to help out.

My first thought was: "Are you serious? I know absolutely nothing about wine!"

But I did what I was told.

And that changed everything.

Guests started asking me all sorts of weird and wonderful wine questions. I didn't know the answers, which was slightly terrifying—but instead of putting me off wine, it made me curious.

I started reading.

Then I wanted to know more.

The more I learned, the more fascinated I became.

The Spier tasting room opened the door to the wonderful world of wine for me.

From Tasting Room to the Cellar

After graduating from high school, I started working full-time in the tasting room and began taking wine courses through the Cape Wine Academy and WSET.

But I wanted to understand more than what happened in the glass.

I was given the opportunity to help with harvest, and I loved getting my hands dirty during winemaking season. That experience eventually led me to complete my Senior Cellar Operations Level 2 at Elsenburg Agricultural College.

Armed with new knowledge—and plenty of harvest stories—I headed back into the tasting room.

And that's when I realised one of the things I love most about wine:

The people.

Wine isn't just about grapes, fermentation or geography. It's about conversation, food, travel and sharing experiences.

Representing Spier at wine trade shows across South Africa gave me even more opportunities to talk about wine, learn from others, and share what I knew.

Getting my hands dirty during harvest was always fun.

Seven Years Later, Everything Changed

I spent seven years at Spier Wine Farm before one fateful meeting in 2014 changed the direction of my career.

The inaugural Flying Winemaker Tour was taking place in South Africa, and Spier was one of the stops.

That's where I met Eddie McDougall.

That chance encounter eventually brought me to The Flying Winemaker in Hong Kong, opening the door to a completely new country, new opportunities, and a new chapter in my wine journey.

And, of course, it brought me back to something I'm passionate about:

wine education.

That's exactly why we created The Flying Winemaker Crash Course in Wine, to make wine education approachable, social, and, most importantly, enjoyable.

And yes, we now offer a Level 2 Crash Course for those ready to go beyond the basics.

Why Learn More About Wine?

You don't have to become a wine professional to benefit from wine education.

Here are five good reasons to start learning.

1. Wine Can Make Social Experiences Better

Wine and dining are a huge part of how people connect.

Knowing a little about wine can make you more comfortable ordering from a wine list, choosing a bottle for the table, or simply joining a conversation.

And wine makes a pretty great ice-breaker.

You don't need to know everything. Sometimes knowing what you enjoy is more than enough to start a conversation.

2. You'll Become More Confident Buying Wine

Walking into a wine shop or staring at a restaurant wine list can feel overwhelming.

There are grapes, countries, regions, producers, vintages, and unfamiliar terminology everywhere.

Learning the basics helps you understand what you like and why you like it.

That makes choosing your next bottle a lot less intimidating.

3. You'll Train Your Nose and Palate

Smell and taste are incredibly important senses, but we don't always consciously train them.

Wine tasting teaches you to slow down and identify aromas, flavours, textures, acidity, sweetness, and other characteristics.

Suddenly, that glass of wine becomes a little more interesting.

4. Wine Is a Personal Challenge

Wine can be as casual or as serious as you want it to be.

You can simply learn how to taste better, explore different grapes, or challenge yourself to blind-taste wines.

And once you start exploring, there's always something new to discover.

New regions. New producers. New grapes. New styles.

And plenty of reasons to travel.

5. Most Importantly: Wine Is Fun

This might be the most important lesson of all.

Wine doesn't have to be intimidating.

You don't need an encyclopaedic knowledge of Burgundy or the ability to identify a vintage blindfolded.

Wine is meant to be enjoyed.

Learn a little. Taste a lot. Ask questions. Meet people.

And have fun along the way.

The Flying Winemaker Crash Course in Wine

Our Crash Course is designed for eager beginners—and curious wine drinkers who already know a little.

The setting is casual and deliberately less intimidating than a traditional wine class.

With classes limited to 16 people, the smaller group creates plenty of room for questions, conversation, and tasting.

Because wine education shouldn't feel like homework.

It should feel like discovering something new with good people and a glass of wine in your hand.
