MÁLÀ Sparkling Wine Takes on Shenzhen’s Young Wine Crowd

MÁLÀ Brings Fresh Bubbles to Shenzhen’s Young Wine Scene

What makes MÁLÀ a good wine for spicy food?

MÁLÀ NV Sparkling Wine is designed with spicy food in mind, combining bright acidity, fine bubbles, and a lighter, fresher profile. The bubbles refresh the palate between bites, while the wine’s clean finish keeps it lively alongside chilli, Sichuan pepper and other bold Asian flavours.

Over 2,000 visitors. 50 stands. Three days of serious energy.

When The Flying Winemaker teamed up with Kings Wine for a Shenzhen market event, the goal wasn't simply to pour wine. It was to introduce MÁLÀ to a younger generation of drinkers who are curious, social, and far more interested in how wine fits into modern food culture.

And Shenzhen was the perfect place to do it.

Young crowds. Big flavours. Spicy food. Cocktails. Music. Games. Conversation.

In other words: exactly where modern wine belongs.

A Young Crowd Ready to Experiment

More than 2,000 people visited the market over three days, including wine and food lovers from Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

The average visitor was around 28–33 years old, putting the event squarely in the millennial and older Gen Z demographic.

This wasn't your traditional wine fair.

There were no white-tablecloth rules or intimidating tasting rituals. The atmosphere was colourful, loud and social. Wine had to be approachable, useful and, most importantly, enjoyable.

That made it an ideal environment for MÁLÀ.

Shenzhen Market Buzz

MÁLÀ: Made Lighter for Spicy Food

MÁLÀ isn't simply a sparkling wine that happens to work with spicy food.

It's deliberately made with spicy food in mind.

The concept is simple: when you're eating dishes packed with chilli, Sichuan pepper, aromatics and bold seasoning, the wine shouldn't make the experience heavier.

MÁLÀ brings:

  • Lower residual sugar
  • Bright, refreshing acidity
  • Fine bubbles
  • A clean finish
  • A lighter, vibrant drinking style

Think green apple, juicy peach, and a gentle floral lift, followed by bubbles that refresh the palate between bites.

That's the magic of sparkling wine with spicy food. Rather than competing with the heat, the bubbles help reset your palate, making that next bite just as exciting as the first.

The Shenzhen Sampling Lesson

MÁLÀ didn't immediately become the star of the show.

And that's okay.

Some wines need to be understood through the glass rather than through a sales pitch.

By the third day, increased sampling changed the response. Visitors who initially tasted MÁLÀ out of curiosity started coming back for another pour.

The words that kept surfacing?

Fresh. Fine bubbles. Light. Vibrant.

That last one is particularly important.

MÁLÀ is designed to feel vibrant rather than heavy.

The Shenzhen takeaway was simple: when people taste MÁLÀ, the proposition makes sense.

When MÁLÀ Meets the Cocktail Bar

Then something unexpected happened.

People started turning MÁLÀ into cocktails.

And honestly? We weren't complaining.

The Sichuan Mule

Gin infused with fresh Sichuan peppercorns and chilli, combined with vermouth and topped with MÁLÀ.

The result was spicy, aromatic, lightly tingling, and seriously refreshing.

The Green Mango MÁLÀ Fizz

Gin infused with green mango and Sichuan peppercorns, combined with a touch of lychee paste and topped with MÁLÀ.

Tropical, tangy, spicy, and completely unexpected.

Both cocktails showed another side of MÁLÀ: it isn't restricted to the dinner table.

It can also play in modern cocktail culture.

Wine Tasting Becomes an Experience

The wine was only part of the attraction.

Games, conversations, and storytelling helped turn the booth into a place where people actually wanted to stay.

Our Brewmaster's enthusiasm helped create genuine conversations around the wine. Visitors asked questions, talked about food pairings, and shared their own ideas about how they'd drink MÁLÀ.

That matters.

For younger wine drinkers, discovering wine isn't always about learning traditional wine rules. It's about finding something that fits their lifestyle, food, and social experience.

And when there was a game to play or a conversation to join, people stayed even longer.

What Shenzhen Taught Us About Modern Wine

The Shenzhen event reinforced several important lessons for MÁLÀ and The Flying Winemaker:

Shenzhen insight What it means for wine brands
Young drinkers are curious Give them an approachable reason to try something new
Sampling drives discovery Some wines need to be experienced rather than explained
Spicy food changes the pairing conversation Wine needs to work with the food people actually eat
Cocktails create another entry point Sparkling wine can move beyond traditional wine occasions
Experience matters Tastings should feel social, interactive and memorable
New-world styles are gaining attention Keep watching what younger Asian consumers are drinking

The bigger picture?

Modern Asian dining needs modern wine.

And that means wines designed around today's food culture — not wines that expect the food to adapt to them.

Why MÁLÀ Works for Modern Asian Dining

MÁLÀ sits at the intersection of several growing wine trends: spicy food pairings, sparkling wine, cocktail culture, and younger consumers looking for less traditional ways to drink wine.

For restaurants, hotels, F&B groups, and wine traders, this creates an interesting opportunity.

MÁLÀ can be positioned as:

  • A sparkling wine for spicy Asian cuisine
  • A fresh alternative for hot pot and Sichuan dishes
  • A modern wine option for younger drinkers
  • A versatile base for wine cocktails
  • A conversation starter for modern Asian dining

In short, MÁLÀ isn't trying to make wine more complicated.

It's trying to make wine make more sense.

The Bottom Line

Shenzhen reminded us why we created MÁLÀ in the first place.

Wine doesn't need to be formal. It doesn't need to be intimidating. And it certainly shouldn't tell you what food you're supposed to eat.

It should make the food, the people, and the moment better.

Big thanks to Kings Wine Cellar for bringing us into the Shenzhen market.

We'll be back. 🥂
