A Christmas Message from Eddie McDougall, Founder of The Flying Winemaker

What makes wine special at Christmas?
For The Flying Winemaker founder Eddie McDougall, wine is more than what is in the glass. It is a connection to nature, culture, tradition and people. From a beach picnic in Sydney to a festive table in Hong Kong, wine creates moments to slow down, share and celebrate life.

Christmas is a time for giving, and this year, I’d like to offer a different kind of gift: the gift of knowledge and connection through wine.

Not knowledge about winemaking techniques or food pairings, but an appreciation of what wine can connect us to: nature, place, culture, and centuries of tradition.

As a winegrower, and particularly following the release of our 2023 Margaret River Chardonnay, I feel an even deeper respect for the land and the relationship between place and wine. Technology and viticulture continue to evolve, but the heart of winemaking remains connected to traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Wine, Culture and the Wonder in the Glass

There is something remarkable about wine.

Across cultures and throughout history, wine has represented nourishment, celebration, ritual and community. In the Christian tradition, wine also carries deep spiritual meaning, including the biblical story of Jesus turning water into wine.

For me, the transformation of grapes into wine is its own kind of wonder — taking something grown from the earth and turning it into something designed to be enjoyed, remembered and shared.

And that last part matters most.

Wine Is Meant to Be Shared

Wine brings people together.

It can be enjoyed at a relaxed Christmas picnic on a Sydney beach or poured alongside a beautifully prepared festive meal in a Hong Kong restaurant. The setting may change, but the purpose remains remarkably simple: bringing people together around a table.

A bottle of wine shared with family and friends can create conversation, laughter, and memories. It gives us a reason to pause and appreciate the people around us.

That, to me, is one of wine's greatest gifts.

Looking Ahead with The Flying Winemaker

Thank you for enjoying The Flying Winemaker wines throughout the year.

As we look towards the year ahead, our team remains committed to creating wines that deliver exceptional value, true varietal expression and memorable drinking experiences.

Because wine isn't simply about what's inside the bottle.

To share wine is to share life.

It encourages us to slow down, reflect and savour the moments that matter — especially at Christmas.

Merry Christmas from all of us at The Flying Winemaker.
